About

玉兔迎春, translated literally as「Jade Rabbit welcomes Spring」, is a greeting used to welcome the new Year of the Rabbit. Just as the title suggests, we are a collaborative zine project celebrating the upcoming Year of the Rabbit in 2023. The project will feature original characters (OC) surrounding the theme of rabbits, the Lunar New Year (LNY), and the cultures and traditions associated with this important holiday.We hope to create a physical merch set that includes various bunny themed stationary and a Red Envelope set featuring a collection of original character cards sealed with a custom wax seal. The merch set will be accompanied by a mini illustration booklet.What kind of content does the theme entail?
This project will revolve around the loose theme of rabbits and the LNY. This may include OCs interacting with rabbits, OCs in bunny suits or with rabbit features such as bunny ears and tails, or even drawings of cute rabbits themselves. Characters may be drawn wearing traditional outfits associated with LNY such as hanfu, hanbok, or ao dai. LNY related activities such as large family dinners, temple visits, lion dances, or fireworks may also be illustrated. While the current mod team is most familiar with Chinese traditions of LNY, we would like to welcome and include any culture that celebrates the occasion!Can existing characters be drawn for the zine?
Contributors will be more than welcome to draw their existing OCs as long as they fit within the theme of the project! Of course, brand new designs will be loved as well. As we are an OC project, fan art of existing IPs or other’s OCs will not be allowed.Do applicants need to be from LNY celebrating cultures?
Not at all! We will not be requesting such personal info nor doing such bg checks on applicants. Everyone is welcome even if you’re not familiar with the holiday itself as long as you remain respectful.The mods ourselves do come from LNY celebrating cultures. zxny comes from a Mainland Chinese background while mack comes from a Vietnamese background. We will be checking submitted pitches and WIPs throughout the creation period to provide feedback as well as suggestions for those less familiar with the holiday. Of course, we do still encourage contributors to do their own research with LNY being an important holiday to such a wide range of cultures. We cannot claim to be experts on any one experience, only to share our own.Is this a for-profit or for-charity project?
We are a for-profit project. Any profit after production will be split equally between all participants. The monetary amount will depend on actual sales. It is possible that there may not be any funds to split at the end. However, contributors will be guaranteed a copy of the zine + shipping regardless of sales as thank you for your participation!How will contributors be compensated?
All contributors will be guaranteed either a copy of the zine booklet or the Red Envelope set, shipping included. Depending on sales, we hope to be able to provide contributors with a complementary full bundle. Any remaining profits after production will be split between all participants.Will there be any writers included?
We appreciate the interest we've received from writers and poets. Unfortunately, Year of the Rabbit is an illustration only project.
